Kopi Luwak, or Civet Coffee, refers to brewed coffee made from coffee berries that have been eaten and excreted by the Civet Cat. Coffee brewed from such berries are said to have a very unique flavor.

These cat-like creatures from Indonesia feeds mainly on fruits and berries; including the coffee berry. Their excrement would fall onto the forest floor and collectors would harvest these fermented beans to further process them for exportation worldwide.

Initially, the excreted berries were collected from wild civet cats and because they were so rare, (it was said only 500kg are produced per year) it commanded a premium price for these berries!

Here's a summary of the above video in 2:45 mins

In Singapore, 1kg costs about $400 while 1 sachet (10 gram for 1 cup) is $10. (I could be wrong about the price though. Do correct me if you know the market rate for this Kopi Luwak)

And it is no wonder why profitability has driven the traditional way of collecting these berries from the wild to intensive farming methods where civet cats are housed in horrific conditions.

Just like the dogs in puppymills, these>Civet Cats
that has been locked up in crampedenclosures for long hoursappear to beneurotic, pacing to and fro in their cages. Some were even injured and sick.

Despite the appalling conditions that these Civic Cats were subjected to, this method of battery farming is not considered illegal in Indonesia. The only way the farmers can continue with this atrocity is through your support. They will not stop doing this as long as it brings them profit.

So, say NO to Kopi Luwak.

The next time you enjoy your very expensivecoffee, think about the cruelty that goes inside your cup.
