The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first part of a trilogy film based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel of the same name. The two other parts, The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again are due for theatrical releases in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

This trilogy is the prequel to The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.

Synopsis:

The story began on the 111th birthday of Bilbo Baggins - uncle of Frodo - penning down an adventure that took place some 60 years ago.

He was hand-picked by non other than Gandalf, the wizard himself to be part of the 13 Dwarves' quest to reclaim Lonely Mountain from Smaug, a fire-breathing dragon who has taken over their homeland, making them homeless and scattered all over the land.

Quite contented with living peacefully in the Shire, it takes a little persuading to convince Bilbo to sign on the contract as the party's burglar which he eventually did.

Led by Thorin, grandson of the ruler of the Dwarves, the party advanced towards their expedition when they discovered the Orcs hot on their trails.

This was due to Azog, leader of the Orcs having lose an arm to Thorin in an earlier battle.

Gandalf led them to seek refuge at Rivendell, home of the Elves much to Thorin's dismay.

While Smaug was attacking his grandfather's kingdom back then, Thorin had seen the Elves turning their backs on his people instead of helping them which leads to his bitter resentment against them.

And so, Thorin left Rivendell with his fellow Dwarves and Bilbo without Gandalf while he was still in talks with the White Council.

While passing through the Misty Mountains, they decided to spend the night in a cave but were captured by the Goblins and taken to the Goblin King who had wanted to turn them in to Azog who has placed a bounty on Thorin's head.

It was here that Bilbo was separated from the Dwarves when he fell over in the cavern. When he awoke, he encountered Gollum at a underground lake where picked up a mysterious ring that Gollum has dropped.

Gollum had wanted to make a meal out of Bilbo but the latter discovered the secret behind the ring when he accidentally put it on and turned invisible. Bilbo then trailed the devastated Gollum to the exit of the cave.

Meanwhile, outnumbered by the Goblins, death was almost certain for the Dwarves if not for the timely arrival of Gandalf who lead everyone to fight their way out of the cave.

Still invisible, Bilbo followed them out and was reunited with the Dwarves and Gandalf but they were soon caught up by the Orcs hunting party who drove them to the edge of a cliff.

Upon Gandalf's instructions, everyone climbed up the trees to escape from the ferocious Wargs, a wolf-like creature that the Orcs rode on. However, the Wargs easily uprooted the trees which fell over the cliff one by one.

Just as the last remaining tree where everyone were clinging onto threatens to fall over, giant eagles appeared from the horizon and carried them to safety near Lonely Mountain where Smaug has awoken from his slumber...

Conclusion:

I loved the LOTR trilogy and the epic war scenes were something that I anticipates.

In The Hobbit, however, the war scenes were limited in the beginning when Smaug attacked the Dwarves' kingdom; when Thorin recalled the fight in which the Orcs beheaded his grandfather; and the Dwarves' fight with the Goblins in the cavern towards the ending.

Despite so, I still love this movie for it's beautiful scenery and outstanding cinematography which is truly a feast for the eyes.

I look forward to the next two parts of the movie.
