It has been a while since I last came to People's Park Food Centre at 32 New Market Road. I do pass by Chinatown occasionally but it is always en route to Smith Street instead.
After undergoing a 3-months renovation last year, the hawker centre is now cleaner and brighter although I still see birds loitering about.
As I arrived a little after two o'clock, the lunch crowd has already subsided. I was walking around wondering what is still available post lunch hour when I chance upon Uncle Louis Famous Chicken Rice. I do not remember seeing this stall before.
For some reason, the combination of the word "uncle" and "chicken rice" made me think that this is the new outlet of another similar sounding brand. (It is not) #BrainNotBrainingMoment

I see steamed (poached) and roasted (deep fried) chicken as well as char siu (barbecue pork) and siu yuk (roasted pork) hanging on the racks. I ordered a poached chicken rice set ($4).
As I turn around to walk off with the tray in my hands, I nearly stumble over the leg of a Caucasian who had his leg sticking out across the aisle. He was having a booze with four others at the table in front of the stall.
Fortunately, my reflexes prevented myself from falling forward. The bloody lowlife did not look one bit remorseful nor offer a word of apology.

I did not request for any specific chicken part and was given the deboned breast meat.
The texture is moist and tender but at the same time fibrous. It would be lovely if it can be smoother.
Served separately from the rice, the chicken portion given is pretty generous. Sitting on some cucumber slices, the meat is dressed in a concoction of soy sauce and sesame oil which I find a tad too salty for my liking.

The plump and fluffy Thai short grained rice separates easily without clumping. It is richly flavored yet not too greasy.
I like the rice and do not mind having a second helping sans meat.

I have no idea what soup this is but it is not the runny type without soul. It is flavorful and comforting to have with bold hints of ginger aftertaste.

Do help yourself to the holy trinity of chicken rice dipping sauce available: dark sauce, ginger puree and the mandatory garlic chili.
I am not usually a fan of the dark sauce but I drizzled a few rounds on the rice this time for some color.
The ginger puree is mildly savory without that pungent, spicy note. It goes great as a dip for the chicken or to just have with some rice.
As for the garlic chili, it is not diluted with lots of white vinegar. It is slightly thick and packed quite some heat.
