"Glass Rotunda: Story Of The Forest" Digital Installation At The National Museum Of Singapore

glass rotunda, museums, national museum of singapore, personal, story of the forest, teamlab, william farquhar,

After finishing the temporary exhibition Witness To War: Remembering 1942, I proceeded to Level 2 of the Museum, where the Glass Rotunda is.

It is home to a new permanent work, Story Of The Forest by renowned Japanese digital art collective teamLab.

I entered the rotunda, not knowing what to expect and I was blown away.

*Lower your volume

Upon entering the rotunda from the second floor, I find myself walking across a bridge under a dark dome, from which a potpourri of digital flowers float around. The experience is both surreal and mesmerizing. I could have stayed for a while longer but the effects were rather hypnotic and I was getting giddy.

I exited the rotunda by crossing over to the other side of the bridge and I was transported to a virtual rainforest that was projected onto a whole stretch of wall via projectors. The fauna and flora were based on paintings from the Museum's William Farquhar Collection Of Natural History Drawings.

*William Farquhar was Singapore's first British Resident.

The interactive rainforest is brought to life by use of computer technology. As I followed the animation along the wall, I realizes the corridor slopes downward in a spiral around the rotunda's cylindrical drum.

Reaching the end of the rainforest scene, it brings me to the bottom of the rotunda on Level One. I re-entered the rotunda and was back under the bridge in the dome. I looked up and realizes the potpourri of flowers falls all the way down from the top. There are luminous trees and forest inhabitants that appear around you whenever someone walks across the bridge on top.

This digital installation is nothing short of amazing and I recommend that everyone should at least go see it once.

The Mystery Of The Curry Murder Case @ Orchard Road Presbyterian Church

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.

I passed by the Orchard Road Presbyterian Church while on my way to the National Museum of Singapore.

This church is no stranger to anyone who frequents Orchard Road. Located at the Bras Basah end of Orchard Road right next to the YMCA, the Orchard Road Presbyterian Church has been around since our colonial days.

However, do you know it has a very sombre past?

The church is the crime scene of a possible murder case dubbed as "The Curry Murder" which shook the nation in 1984.

Image may be NSFW.

At that time, the police received a tip-off that a man has been murdered by his wife with the help of her three brothers one of whom is a butcher while another is the caretaker of the church.

Several suspects were picked up and one finally tells the police that the victim was bludgeoned to death with an iron rod before he was cut into small pieces and cooked in curry and rice which was later bagged and thrown into roadside rubbish bins.

The police spent five months trying to gather enough evidence to prosecute the widow of the victim and five members of her family for his murder.

Unfortunately, the victim's remains, the murder weapon as well as the pot used for the cooking were never found and the accused were released for a lack of evidence.

The case was never solved.

Yon Yan 永焱 Fried Bee Hoon And Fried Chicken Wings @ West Coast Market

About six months ago, Eng Kee posted a photo of YAN's stallfront on their Facebook. I was puzzled why did Eng Kee open their new branch at YAN's location?

For the uninitiated, the owner of YAN, Mr Hu, is the original owner of Eng Kee at Commonwealth. Mr  Hu's Chinese name is 胡火荣 and Eng Kee's Chinese name is 荣记  so can you see the link? He sold off the brand and recipe then set up YAN at Redhill. Both stalls offer similar food items i.e economical fried bee hoon and fried chicken wings which both are popular in their own rights.

Since Eng Kee is opening their branch at YAN's location, why didn't they change the signboard to their own before putting up the photo on their Facebook which is what's confusing me.

It wasn't until last December when the Chinese tabloids reported that Mr Hu has ended the business at Redhill Food Centre six months ago due to a work injury but has now reopened for business again at a new location with a new name and they finally have their own Facebook page!

The new stall is located at West Coast Market and have been renamed from YAN (焱) to YON YAN (永焱). Fortunately, I am quite familiar with this area so the new location is not hard to find. It is just slightly around 11am (their opening time) when I reach and there is already a queue in front of the stall.

The queue is still manageable as there were only five customers in front of me which cleared pretty fast. I ordered a plate of fried bee hoon (rice vermicelli) and two fried chicken wings. Doesn't make sense to come all the way here just to have one chicken wing right?

There is no increase in price with the bee hoon still at a ridiculous low of 60¢ while fried chicken wings is at $1.40 each.

Compared to my first visit at YAN when they were still at Redhill, the bee hoon this time round is tastier and less rubbery although the flavors are still light on my palate.

The portion of the bee hoon is very filling and I could not finish it.

I love the thin and crisp chicken skin while the meat is still as succulent and tasty. I managed to get a new batch of freshly fried chicken wings so mine is still piping hot. In fact, the chicken wings here have such high turnover rate there is no time for them to turn cold before they fly off the shelf, quite literally!

There are customers who braved the queue just to buy chicken wings by the dozen.

Eng Kee Chicken Wing 荣记 @ Redhill Market & Food Centre

I have long heard about Eng Kee (荣记) and their famous fried chicken wings but have not gotten round to visiting them as I still have not figured out how to get to their location at Commonwealth.

As fate would have it, they opened a branch at Redhill Market & Food Centre which is easier for me as I already know how to get there. But of all places to set up shop, they opened their branch at the previous stall of YAN (焱), who is also famous for their fried chicken wings.

Since I have just visited YAN (now renamed YON YAN)at their new location at West Coast Market, I thought I might as well visit Eng Kee to see the difference between the two? This is something that I have wanted to do but procrastinated till now.

No, I did not put up the wrong photo of Eng Kee's stall at Redhill Market & Food Centre. This IS indeed Eng Kee's stall but why is YAN's signboard still up there? It has been at least six months since Eng Kee took over. I wonder why they did not put up their own signboard?

Image may be NSFW.

Nevertheless, I ordered myself a plate of fried bee hoon (rice vermicelli) with one fried chicken wing. I noticed that their pricing is exactly the same as YAN's at 60¢ for bee hoon and $1.40 per chicken wing.

Now, this is what I call ECONOMICAL bee hoon!

I would say the fried chicken wing tastes similar to YAN's. After all, they were from the same recipe so it couldn't have strayed too far off. The only thing is, the chicken is not piping hot.

One thing I noticed is that business does not seem brisk around 1pm on a weekday. There is no queue at all when I arrived. While the lady is taking my order, the man is just standing behind her doing nothing.

During YAN's days, time is a luxury for there is no moment too free to just stand around. The perpetual queue means there is always fried chicken cooking at the back. But this is not the scene I see when I am at Eng Kee today.

This is just based on my one-time observation so it might not reflect the real situation.

To be honest, I find Eng Kee's fried bee hoon softer and tastier than YAN's. Even their chili sauce suits me more.

My pressing question is: Why is Eng Kee still using YAN's signboard? Did the owner of YAN sold off his business to Eng Kee again? Is that why YAN is renamed as YON YAN at another location?

Can someone please tell me what is going on?

The row of aquarium shops at Blk 328 Clementi Avenue 2 is my to-go-to place for my aquarium supplies.

At the end of the row is a coffeeshop which I have always walked by but never patronize. Who would when the coffeeshop always seemed so quiet and not all the stalls are in operation? Furthermore, the popular 448 Clementi Market & Food Centre is just a five to ten minutes walk away.

But, little do I know that hidden in the coffeeshop is a Lor Mee stall called Ah Ma Lor Mee (阿嬤滷麵) which happens to be run by the third generation of the popular Feng Zhen Lor Mee (凤珍卤面).

I would not have known about them if not for the fact that Ah Ma Lor Mee was among the Top 10 most-voted-for stalls of the Singapore Food Master 2017 competition and it emerges as one of the top 3 in the west zone category.

Lor Mee is one of my favorite comfort food but it is so hard to find a satisfying one. My favorite Lor Mee is from Old Bukit Purmei but sadly, the uncle had to wind up business due to his ailing health. Fortunately, I found my second favorite from the Feng Zhen Lor Mee branch at Yew Tee.

When I found out that the third generation of Feng Zhen Lor Mee had set up shop at Blk 328 Clementi Ave 2, I wanted to knock myself on the head for not knowing earlier! Now I can have a nice bowl of Lor Mee whenever I go shopping for my aquarium supplies!

I ordered the $4 bowl of Fish Lor Mee and opted for a mixture of bee hoon and mee. As per standard SOP, I added the usual condiments like cut red chili, sambal chili, coriander, two spoonfuls of minced garlic and two spoonfuls of black vinegar.

The bowl come with shredded fish, lor bak, fish cake, ngor hiang and half a braised egg. The lor wasn't too overly starchy and does not turn watery by the end of the meal. This is certainly a decent bowl of Lor Mee.

But if you were to compare Ah Ma Lor Mee with Feng Zhen Lor Mee, the latter still got my vote. Firstly, I find the minced garlic too watery/diluted. Despite adding two spoonfuls of it, there is no garlicky kick at all. Secondly, the black vinegar does not have that pungent smell that make Lor Meeshiok. I wonder could it be the brand they used which is, perhaps, more 'subdued' in flavor?

About six months ago, I was checking out Mei Ling Market & Food Centre for good eats. I tried the recommended Xin Lu Teochew Fishball Kway Teow Mee and Shi Hui Yuan Hor Fun Specialty which I had already blogged about then. At that time, I also had the Lor Mee from Hai Tang Lor Mee.

Sadly, the photos for the Lor Mee did not turn out satisfactory so I had to make a return visit to take the photos again. However, on the day of my visit, the stall was closed and there is a notice on the shutters informing customers that they would be taking a two months break.

This post eventually got pushed down and lay forgotten in the drafts section.

With the new year, I decided to do some spring cleaning to clear away the drafts which I had accumulated therefore, I returned to Mei Ling Market & Food Centre and ordered a bowl of Hai Tang Lor Mee in order to complete this post.

I ordered a $3 bowl of bee hoon/mee and added the usual condiments like black vinegar and cut red chili.

Hai Tang Lor Mee has got to be the most unpalatable-looking bowl of Lor Mee I ever had because all the ingredients are buried under the dark, gooey gravy. It does not help that the bowl they used are black making everything look more drearily dull than it already is. As the stall is manned by two elderly ladies, making the Lor Mee look "pretty" is probably the least priority on their mind.

But, as they say, do not judge a book by its cover. The Lor Mee definitely taste better than its looks.

The amount of bee hoon/mee is quite filling for me. Ingredients wise, it contained bits of fishcake, lor bak, a quarter of a hard-boiled egg, while the rest are mainly ngor hiang. I think there were a couple of crispy thingy which I am unable to identify.

The sign at the bus stop

Getting to this food centre is very convenient. If you look at the map, the nearest MRT Station is Queenstown which would require a bit of walking upslope. I would suggest taking bus service 64 from the bus stop (10201) opposite Redhill MRT Station instead as it brings you directly bus stop (11579) nearest to the food centre with minimal walking required. You know you have reached when you see aunties/grannies alighting the bus with their marketing trollies.

Singapore and its nearby region seems to have been hit by an unusually cold weather spell since the beginning of the new year. At a time like this, having a hot, steaming pot of claypot Laksa doesn't sound like a bad idea.

I have always wanted to try Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa not because of its Bib Gourmand status but I am a sucker for claypot-anything. Food seem particularly tasty when it is served in a claypot, don't you think?

The stall at Alexandra Village Food Centre is located along the first row just opposite to Tai Chong Kok Confectionery at Blk 122 so it is really easy to find.

It is self-service here whereby you queue up to place your order, make payment and collect your food. The Laksa here are available in three sizes at $4, $5 and $6. I joined the queue and decided to go for the medium-sized one.

My eyes lit up the moment I saw the considerable size of the claypot but my happiness was short lived as I saw the contents inside is barely half the height of the receptacle.

With the Laksa gravy still bubbling from the heat, I found myself a table and sat down to inspect my meal. Apart from the thick bee hoon (rice vermicelli), ingredients included two small prawns, a couple of tiny see-hum (cockles), some shredded chicken, fishcake, tau pok (tofu puff) and beansprouts.

The Laksa gravy seems to be made up of broths from two different pots. The thinner broth (pictured, above) makes up the bulk of the gravy while on top of the noodles lies a splash of creamy-looking broth that have a thicker consistency (pictured, below).

The Laksa is quite shiok to have in this chilly weather since the claypot is able to retain the temperature of the food longer.

I thoroughly enjoyed the slurpilicious thick bee hoon in the broth. I actually prefer to pick up a long strand of thick bee hoon with my chopsticks rather than have them cut shot and eaten with a spoon, as with the case of Katong Laksa.

Another thing I liked about this Laksa is the tau pok which have absorbed the gravy like a sponge. You can literally feel the gravy gushing all over your tongue when you eat it.

However, too much of a good thing may backfire instead. I find the coconut cream too heavy for me as I felt jelat after a few mouthfuls. I tend to finish my Laksa gravy but for this particular one, I simply cannot.

Also, I like my Laksa fiery spicy but, despite adding the sambal chilli provided, I still find the spiciness too mild for me.

Hor Fun Premium is another one of the more popular stalls along the same row as Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa at Alexandra Village Food Centre. I was there on a Sunday morning and had their Beef Hor Fun for breakfast.

Hor Fun sounds a tad too heavy to have at 10-ish in the morning if you ask me but the charred kway teow (flat rice noodle) drenched in the alluring eggy gravy is tough to say no to.

Apart from Beef, you also have the option of Sliced Fish or Seafood with your Hor Fun. Or, if you prefer, you can have those options withMui Fan too if that rocks your boat. They serve Pork Ribs Rice, Ginger & Spring Onion Sliced Fish Rice and Ginger & Spring Onion Beef Rice as well.

The three components of this plate of Beef Hor Fun - the kway teow, beef and gravy are separately cooked and assembled upon order.

While mixing the springy kway teow with the gravy, I realized that the layers does not clump together which is a good sign. I took a bite and was pleasantly surprised by the aroma of the wok hei. It is not easy to find a Hor Fun with wok hei nowadays and this is one fine example.

Next, they are rather generous with the portion of beef that come in big slices. The beef were fresh and tender without that artificial tenderized texture. Deserving of a mention here is that glorious egg gravy which is not overly starchy and did not turn watery at the end of my meal.

What's amazing is that this plate of Beef Hor Fun costs only $4! For the quality and quantity, I have no complaints whatsoever.

I would say that this is definitely worth a try.

Shocking would be an understatement to describe my first impression of Lau Phua Chay Roasted Delicacies (老半齋燒臘) at Alexandra Village Food Centre.

I was actually queuing for the Avocado juice next door during my previous visit to the food centre when I saw the darkest char siew I had ever seen hanging behind the glass window.

That certainly got my attention and I made a mental note to try this out during my next visit here.

So, I was back at the food centre the following week and I decided to order the char siew and roasted pork rice. It is self-service here whereby you queue to place your order, wait to collect your food and make payment.

When I received my order, I was appalled by the ghastly sight! Never before have I seen such a revolting plate of rice!

I could not discern the char siew from the roasted pork under that blanket of molasses-looking gravy which I later found out to be caramelized bean paste and malt sugar.

My plate of char siew and roasted pork rice comes with an hard-boiled egg and bowl of cabbage soup. Portion wise, it is rather filling for me and I wasn't expecting an egg to be included so I would say $4 for this meal is quite worth it. Furthermore, the soup comes in quite a big bowl and there is even chicken meat in it

Looking past its unappealing appearance, the gravy actually had a unique flavor that goes very well with the rice.

When I had a piece of the char siew, I finally understood why the stall command such a long queue despite the 'ugly' presentation of food. Unlike other roast stall that gives you thinly sliced and anorexic char siew, their coarsely chopped char siew has great char with fats that melt in your mouth.

The roasted pork, on the other hand, did not fare as good. There was no crackling to speak of as the skin has turned soft probably from the gravy.

Next time, I will ask for the gravy to be served separately on the side.

Happy Chinese New Year!

I visited the River Hong Bao at The Float @ Marina Bay on the second day of the Chinese New Year.

While walking over from MBS via Helix Bridge, the 18m tall God of Fortune caught my attention. Unlike previous years, this year's God of Fortune is more jovial.

The afternoon sun is such a killer. I cannot even open my eyes due to the glare!

I recommend coming in the evenings since it would be cooler and more comfortable. Besides, there will not be any golden showers from the God of Fortune till 7pm, 8pm, 9.10pm and 10pm so this is another consideration if that is what you are coming for.

Furthermore, the lanterns will look better in the dark when they are all lit up.

Last year, it was reported in the news that the Golden Shoe Car Park is slated to be demolished to make way for a spanking new 51-storey office tower.

Inevitably, the hawker centre located within the building had to be relocated. This is grim news for many as the hawker centre has been offering affordable food options for those working in the CBD area for the past 33 years.

There is no need for panic though, as the hawkers did not move far - they have simply shifted into a temporary hawker centre just about 200 metres from their original location. One of the levels in the new office building will be reserved as a food court and once the construction has been completed, the former Golden Shoe hawkers will return.

I actually went to check out the temporary food centre a few weeks ago but my arrival coincide with the crazy lunch hour. I was reluctant to join the queue so I decided to recce the place first by taking photographs of the stalls with the longest queue and returning to check them out on another day.

Wei Nan Wang Hock Kian Lor Mee (味難忘福建鹵麵) was one of the stalls that I wanted to check out.

This stall is managed by a pair of elderly couple in their 70s. When I approached the stall, the auntie was busy slicing braised pork. I placed my order with her and she conveyed my order to the uncle who began preparing it.

When my order was ready, auntie helped me to add the minced garlic and vinegar even though the condiments are placed outside the stall where I could have done it myself. I find her so motherly and amicable.

The Lor Mee is available at $3 and $4. I understand that they used to be $2 and $3 a few years back.

My $4 bowl was almost filled to the brim with ingredients and certainly looked very appetizing. In my bowl, there are shredded fish meat, slices of lean braised meat, ngor hiang balls and something that looked suspiciously like fried wanton skin.

Since I did not request for my usual mix of bee hoon (rice vermicelli) and mee (round, yellow noodles), they used the default flat, yellow noodles which is cooked al dente.

One interesting thing about their lor (gravy) is that it's not as starchy as the usual Lor Mee. Theirs is more soupy and not too salty but in no way any less delicious, in my opinion.

Furthermore, the portion is quite substantial and with the fresh ingredients used, I think this is really value for money!

It won't be another four years till the new building is completed but honestly, I do not know how many more years can the elderly couple keep the stall running? I wish there is someone to take over the stall in due time so that we can still enjoy this delicious bowl of goodness for years to come.

You can tell that Singaporeans really love their Nasi Lemak when the national dish has been given numerous makeovers in recent years. From Nasi Lemak Burger to Nasi Lemak Onigiri and even Nasi Lemak served with lobster, Old Chang Kee has now upped the game with their own Nasi Lemak Chicken'O!

Encased within the green, flaky crust are the usualsuspects like chicken, a wedge of hard-boiled egg, ikan bilis, peanuts and sambal.

Old Chang Kee's plump puff is always such a tease.

This puff is best enjoyed while it is still hot. Honestly, despite having three puffs, I still did not notice any noticeable chicken meat. Alas, there is also not much of a pandan and coconut fragrance associated with Nasi Lemak but, all is forgiven with the sedap-licious sambal which I particularly enjoyed.

Say Seng Authentic Teochew Mee Pok (生成乾面) is one of the few stalls with a snaking queue that caught my attention during my first visit to the temporary hawker centre. I did not managed to have anything at that time because I do not want to join the lunch time queue.

I returned for a visit slightly earlier on another day and I headed straight for the stall only to find that there is no queue.

The mee pok here costs between $3 to $6 but the $3 portion is only available before 11am. I decided to go for the $4 bowl after a quick glance at the menu.

My mee pok was ready within a minute or two. Giving the mee pok a good toss, I took a bite and was instantly sold.

First of all, the taste is really old school. I believe the sauce included pork lard oil, light soy and their special home-made chili sauce which delivers a kick yet have a ketchup-ish sweetness to it.

And that crispy pork lard is to die for! Some stall's chu yau char are so off-putting with the stale oil smell but this is divine. Together with the sauce, the chu yau char actually complemented the taste of the noodles.

Next, the ingredients.

There are two fish balls, one halved prawn, some slices of pork loin and fish cake. The fish balls are smooth and soft but lacked the firm texture I prefer. The prawn on the other hand is fresh and crunchy. As for the pork loin, it is tender and fresh-tasting.

On the whole, this is a rather decent bowl of mee pok which I do not mind having again and again.

My first visit to Ah Liang Ipoh Hor Fun was at their Maxwell Food Centre outlet a few weeks ago after a appointment nearby.

They have an impressive menu with ten variations of Ipoh Hor Fun for you to choose from:

  2. Shredded Chicken Hor Fun with Fried Fish Dumpling & Crab Meat

Fried fish dumpling is their specialty and a hot favorite among the customers thus, I ordered item number 7 on the menu, which is Fried Fish Dumpling Hor Fun.

I liked the dish very much then therefore I decided to have it again when I saw their other outlet at Market Street Interim Hawker Centre.

Ipoh Hor Fun has always been one of my favorite dish as I enjoy slurping on the silky hor fun drenched in the savory sauce. What makes Ah Liang Ipoh Hor Fun stand out is that their sauce have a subtle herbal taste to it which is not found in the others.

As mentioned earlier, their plump and meaty fried fish dumpling is the star here. Despite being fish dumpling, I doubt the filling inside is 100% fish meat. They might have mixed in minced chicken perhaps (I might be wrong though so do correct me in the comments if you know).

The fish dumplings are served hot and crispy during both visits. I believe the stall fry small batches of the fish dumplings at a time so the dumplings do not get cold. You can hear the dumpling skin go crunch with every bite.

Don't forget to get some mayonnaise that is provided in front of the stall to dip your fried fish dumplings with.

Actually, my main purpose there is to look for the 50-feet tall bear stack however, I walked to and fro between Siloso and Palawan three times yet I could not find them. In the end, I realized that I have walked past them numerous time without knowing.

There are NO We Bare Bears at the Siloso Beach side. I have done all the walking for you so you don't have to.

Of course, Sentosa FunFest 2018 is not just all about Grizzly, Panda and Ice Bear. There are mega inflatable water slides, foam pools and other water activities for the kids and young-at-heart. You can also watch free movie screenings under the stars at Palawan Green.

The Live Turtle And Tortoise Museum @ The Chinese Garden

Located right inside the Chinese Garden lies Singapore's - and probably the world's - only turtle and tortoise museum. It is a unique, and one-of-a-kind museum, which houses a varied collection of the reptiles including some endangered species on the CITES.

It also holds the Guinness World Record since 2005 for the largest collection of turtle and tortoise items.

Unfortunately for the museum, the site it is sitting on has been incorporated into the masterplan design of the Jurong Lake Gardens project.

This spells nothing but trouble for the 500 turtles and tortoises who have lost their home with nowhere to go.

With a heavy heart, I decided to pay the museum a visit, four days before they are slated to close - permanently.

The museum is in desperate need of funds to source for a new location.

If you wish to help the turtles and tortoises from an uncertain fate, you may donate any sum here. Or you have until the end of this week, to pay them a visit ($5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and children under 6 years old).

I wish the museum all the best.

This is a very promising bowl of Wanton Mee at Market Street Interim Hawker Centre. Just look at the amount of ingredients in my $3.50 bowl.

The portion of the mee kia is more than half the height of the bowl while char siew, fried wanton and choy sum sits on top. I actually have difficulty finishing the noodles even though what I had was the regular bowl.

It is not difficult to understand why this is one of the more popular stall that command a long queue during lunch time.

There are two pieces of very addictive fried wanton and another two boiled wantons in the soup. Of the two, I preferred the former more due to their crispiness. Who can resist fried wantons, right?

This thickly sliced char siew is roasted in-house. It has the smoky flavor and charred exterior that I can only dream of in a good char siew. However, the cut I got is very lean without any ounce of fat hence the texture feels rather dry and stringy to me.

This is just a personal preference but I am not a fan of dark sauce Wanton Mee. I would have asked them to skip the dark soy if I knew earlier. Nevertheless, the noodles have a springy bite and do not clump together.

This bowl of Wanton Mee is definitely value-for-money especially in the CBD area. My only worry is that once the food stalls here have shifted into the new food court in four years time, the hawkers would be in a struggle to keep prices low; I am sure rental and overheads in an air-conditioned food court would be more expensive than in a hawker centre.

Well, I guess only time will tell.

A bowl of kway teow soup is something that people usually have when they are not feeling well or do not have much of an appetite because it is light and not so heavy on the stomach.

I, for one, can have kway teow soup anytime of the day because I love soupy stuff; not necessary only when I am sick.

It is my comfort food and my backup plan when I have no idea what to have for my meal at the hawker centre.

Market Street Teochew Kway Teow Mee offers Teochew-styled noodles either dry or soup with your option of noodles like mee pok (flat noodles), mee kia (thin noodles), kway teow (flat rice noodles), etc.

I ordered the regular bowl of kway teow soup that comes with two fish balls, some slices of fish cake, pork liver, pork slices, slivers of mushroom and bak chor (minced meat) on top of the kway teow.

The portion is quite standard.

I had a sip of the soup and was surprised by the light, yet robust taste. Kway teow soup usually give people the impression that they are bland but this has got to be the most flavorsome that I have had so far.

Well, not that I have tasted a lot of different stall's kway teow soup but you get the drift.

The ingredients are pretty generic but on the whole, the kway teow soup is quite satisfying.

This stall is rather popular with the CBD crowd during lunch hour so be there early to avoid the long queue.

I have seen this pork chop bun making its rounds on Instagram since a few years back but the thought of going all the way to Seng Huat Coffee House at Hougang is enough to stop me in my tracks.

It was actually after my visit to Sentosa FunFest 2018 when I thought of dropping by Seng Huat Coffee House since it's "on the way". My idea of "on the way" is by taking the North-East Line from Habourfront MRT Station (NE1) to Hougang MRT Station (NE14).

The coffeeshop is conveniently located just right outside Hougang MRT Station opposite Hougang Mall.

The pork chop bun costs $3.50 ala carte. A set which includes a hot beverage (coffee/tea) and two soft-boiled eggs would set you back by $5.

I do not feel like having eggs at that time so I ordered just the bun and a coffee which costs me $4.70. Come to think of it, it's more value-for-money to have the two eggs for 30¢ more.

Anyway!

This pig-shaped bun is handmade every morning to ensure freshness and only assembled upon ordering.

The pork chop is topped with a slice of cheese, some mayonnaise and chili sauce then sandwiched between the lightly toasted buns.

The buns are warm and fluffy while the pork chop is succulent. The pork chop was marinated overnight but whatever flavors it had were masked by the sauces, unfortunately.

Despite that, the pork chop bun is quite enjoyable when eaten hot and a refreshing change from the usual fast food burgers. The pork chop does not have the gamey smell and is not tough to tear apart with the teeth.

Apart from the pork chop bun, the UFO bun (太空包) seem equally popular as well.

Located within the same coffeeshop as the pork chop bun is a noodle stall that sell dry mee sua, fish ball noodle, abalone noodle and bak chor mee.

I have heard nothing but good reviews about their bak chor mee so I decided to try it out. Now, do you understand why I did not order soft-boiled eggs with my pork chop bun?

There is a short queue before me which cleared pretty fast. When it finally reached my turn, I ordered a bowl of bak chor mee kia.

My bak chor mee kia comes with meat ball, slices of pork, pig's liver, slivers of mushroom and of course, bak chor (minced meat).

Unlike other bak chor mee, theirs came with crispy fried anchovies that added some crunchiness to the dish.

I am happy to report that their concoction of sauce is on point. The spiciness and vinegary level is just nice to hit the spot without being too overwhelming.

As for the mee kia, the timing in blanching the noodles was controlled well as it retained a good bite.

Even the soup is very hearty, as it contains the essence from the blanching of the pork ingredients.

I will definitely vote this as one of the best bak chor mee in Singapore. In fact, I enjoy this much more than the one with the star at Crawford Lane which is a tad too heavy-handed with the sauces that you cannot taste the natural sweetness of the pork.
